Cleveland’s Conwell and Steen Set For Bouts in Indiana at The Triple Crown
World-ranked Super Welterweight Charles Conwell and Middleweight Isaiah Steen learn opponents for Saturday, February 8 in Hammond, Indiana
A familiar Cleveland duo, 2016 Olympian Charles Conwell and undefeated Middleweight Isaiah Steen, help bolster a deep, diverse line-up of boxing action Saturday in Hammond, Indiana. Newly crowned IBF Super Lightweight champion Mary McGee makes her first defense of her title versus Deanha Hobbs in the main event of 4 Champs Promotions’ Triple Crown International Showdown card.
4 Champs serves as the local promoter with support from DiBella Entertainment and Team Empire Boxing – the card features two world title bouts.
After weeks of his name being across from “TBA”, Conwell (13-0, 11 KOs) – the No. 11th-ranked IBF Super Welterweight – is scheduled to face Bruno Leonardo Romay (21-8, 18 KOs) of Argentina per BoxRec. An Instagram account that belongs to Conwell’s home gym, Toledo, Ohio’s Soul City Boxing Gym, posted a image that indicates his opponent is Mexico’s Ramses Agaton (22-11-3, 12 KOs). Additionally, a key member of his training team, Roshawn Jones, tweeted an image of Agaton as well.
Steen (13-0, 10 KOs) has fought alongside Conwell on a number of Midwest cards, and Split-T Management represents both of the undefeated fighters. At this time, Steen’s opponent on BoxRec is still listed as TBA, but Jones’ tweet indicates he’s facing 35-year old Kenneth Council (10-3-1, 8 KOs) from Knoxville, Tennessee.
Regardless if BoxRec or Jones’ information is correct, both fighters are currently in Hammond, and have posted tweets inviting fans and supporters to attend the weigh-ins tomorrow at 12:00 pm. Moreover, both fighters also appeared at the event’s press conference Wednesday, February 7 held at the Genesis Convention Center in nearby Gary.
According to a Women of Boxing’s article, Conwell acknowledged the current and former women’s champions featured on The Triple Crown International Showdown, but confidently stated his business in the Hoosier State.
“I am happy to be on the card with a lot of great women talent, but I am looking to steal the show. I know there is a lot of great talent, a lot of world champions, but I am looking to steal the show and put it on for the men.”
Steen’s remarks hinted at the uncertainty regarding his opponent on fight night.
“I am coming to fight. I have trained hard for this fight. I am ready for whoever. I am just going off of the blueprint.”
In addition to the McGee vs Hobbs title fight, Christina Linardatou will battle Prisca Vicot for the vacant WBO Super Lightweight belt she held prior to her last bout against undisputed Lightweight champion Katie Taylor. Two-time world title challenger Melissa St. Vil faces one-loss Jessica Camara in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds. Australia’s Ebanie Bridges will make her U.S. debut versus Crystal Hoy. Chicago’s first female champion Leatitia Robinson ends an 11-year hiatus to face Claire Hafner.
The Triple Crown’s Stellar Line-Up
Also from Chicago, Welterweight Destyne Butler (8-0, 5 KOs) will fight Toledo’s Marcus Washington (4-2, 1 KO) for a vacant regional title. Indianapolis-based Super Featherweight Austin Manning (7-0, 5 KOs) will face his most challenging test in Lansing, Michigan’s experienced Tyron Harris (26-14, 16 KOs).
Fans can also look forward to special appearances by former WBA Super Middleweight champion Alicia “The Empress” Napoleon-Espinosa and former WBC Middleweight Champion Kali “KO Mequinonoag” Reis.
All of the world-class action takes place Saturday at 5825 Sohl Avenue, Hammond Civic Center with doors opening at 4:00 pm. First bell is scheduled for 6:00 preceded by a pre-show that starts at 5:00. Tickets are available at www.ticketmee.com and start at $45.
