Xander Zayas Soundly Defeats James Martin For Unanimous Decision; Improves to 7-0
LAS VEGAS (February 20, 2021) — Undefeated Welterweights Xander Zayas and James Martin fought on the ESPN+ portion of Top Rank’s WBC Super Featherweight championship title fight Miguel Berchelt vs. Oscar Valdez. The bout was a six-rounder that took place inside the MGM Grand Conference Center.
Zayas (7-0, 5 KOs) boxed sharply through the first two frames. He maintained a good work-rate, established his jab and regularly landed left hooks to both Martin’s chin and body.
Martin, a 23-year old from Philadelphia, Penn., quickly fell behind in the scoring. His punch output lagged behind the taller 18-year old San Juan, Puerto Rico native. As Zayas’ punches arrived in various types of sets, Martin (6-1) struggled to solve the onslaught. He had moments inside, but rarely followed up his own jab with additional offense.

Heading into the final two rounds, and with fight in full control, Zayas’ offense remained disciplined and sharp. He managed his distance well and took smart shots to close the show. Martin continued to wait and cover up from the incoming flurries.
The 5-foot 10-inch Puerto Rican touched Martin repeatedly with his jab in the sixth round. Martin landed a solid left hand while Zayas was inside. He added another left hook before the end of the bout. With so much on display offensively, Zayas made enough mistakes to also answer any questions about his chin.
For the decision, the three judges all scored the fight 60-54 for a unanimous decision in favor of Zayas.
